"Babi Yar. Context" director.

Ukrainian documentary and feature film director, born in 1964. He grew up in Kyiv and in 1987 graduated from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute with a degree in applied mathematics. From 1987 to 1991 he worked as a researcher at the Kyiv Institute of Cybernetics, specialising in artificial intelligence research. In 1997 he graduated from the Moscow State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), where he studied directing. He has been making films since 1996 and is an extremely prolific filmmaker - so far he has directed 23 award-winning documentaries and four feature films.

His first feature film 'My Joy' (2010) premiered in the Main Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, as did his next feature film 'In the Fog' (2012), awarded the FIPRESCI Prize at the 65th Cannes Film Festival. In 2017, Loznitsa presented his third feature film ‘A Gentle Creature’, also as part of the Cannes Film Festival. In 2018, he received the Best Director award in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival for his fourth feature, 'Donbas'. In 2013, Loznitsa founded the production company Atoms & Void with Maria Choustova. Loznitsa's feature-length documentary ‘Maydan’ (2014), a chronicle of the Ukrainian revolution, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. His further feature-length documentaries are ‘The Event’ (2015), ‘Austerlitz’ (2016), ‘The Trial’ (2018) and ‘State Funeral’ (2019) were screened as part of the Venice Film Festival. All the above films had their Polish premiere at MDAG.
