A film director, producer and writer born in 1969 in New York.

In his career, he has received, among others, three Independent Spirit Awards - for ‘Pi’ (1998, also Best Director Award at Sundance), ‘The Wrestler’ (2008) and ‘Black Swan’ (2010), as well as the Golden Lion at the 65th Venice IFF for ‘The Wrestler’ (2010). His 'Requiem for a Dream' (2000) earned Ellen Burstyn in the lead role an Oscar® nomination.

After turning down an offer to direct 'Batman Begins', Aronofsky made his third feature film, 'The Fountain' (2006; starring Rachel Weisz). The next picture he directed, 'The Wrestler' (2008), resulted in more Oscar® nominations, this time for Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei. Rourke also received BAFTA awards for Best Leading Actor and Best Actor, and Bruce Springsteen for Best Songwriter. Aronofsky's next film, Black Swan (2010), was nominated for an Oscar® in five categories (including Best Director). In the end, the only statuette went to Natalie Portman, as Best Actress in a Lead Role. 2017 saw the release of Aronofsky's next work, the horror film "mother!", with Jennifer Lawrence in the title role. The director chaired the Main Competition jury at the 68th Venice IFF (2011) and the 65th Berlin IFF (2015).
