35mm of cinema: a journey to the times recorded on the celluloid following the screening of the film film THE LIVING RECORD OF OUR MEMORY
It varied in width from 8mm, through 16mm, 35mm up to 70mm. It could be in black and white, in colour, sometimes with sound recording in mono, other times in stereo. It would break, suffer mechanical damage and, when it fell into the wrong hands, it would sometimes have its reels switched. Although today it seems like a relic of distant history, just 10 years ago Poznań’s cinemas still shared film stock. In retrospect, can it be considered a permanent medium for recording film copies? Is its grainy image inferior in quality to its contemporary, digital counterpart? Which solution is more durable, likely to last for decades and future generations?
To answer these and many other questions, we invite you to visit the projection room of the Muza cinema. We will take you on a sentimental journey in Poznan's only cinema that still regularly screens films from 35 mm film stock. Seweryn Ptaszyński, a long-time cinema operator and an absolute wizard of cinema technology, will be the guardian of the history of analogue film and your most reliable guide.
