The Encounter of Two Masters: Sergei Loznitsa vs. Bill Morrison

Two directors who have mastered the use of archival footage will share the secrets of their work, their approach to history presented in their films through images from the past, and their significance for our understanding of the present.

Bill Morrison, whose retrospective is being presented at the festival, is almost entirely focused on the work with recycled footage, emphasising the material aspect of cinema's history related to the recording of images on decaying film stock.

In his extensive filmography, Sergei Loznitsa has frequently returned to the technique of constructing images from archival material – for example, in the films “The Event”  (2015), “The Trial” (2918), “State Funeral” (2019), as well as in his latest work “Babi Yar. Context”, which has its Polish premiere at the festival.

After the conversation, the filmmakers will answer questions from the Warsaw audience.
